HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Andrew Coker, a senior at Hartsville High School, has been named a South Carolina state finalist in the 2015 Wendy’s High School Heisman awards program. Coker is one of 20 student-athletes in the state to receive the honor.

Coker is a right-handed pitcher for the Red Foxes baseball team. Earlier this year, he committed to attend and play for Clemson University. He was named to Region 6-3A All-Region team as in 2014 and 2015, where he boasted a 20-2 overall record as a starter. He was chosen to the High School Sports Report All-State team in 2015. Following the 2015 Palmetto All-Star game, he was chosen as the Diamond Prospects most valuable pitcher.

Coker made the Hartsville High School honor roll every semester since his freshman year. Last year, he was named a junior scholar and served as a junior marshal. This year, Coker is an International Baccalaureate Programme Diploma candidate.

Each state finalist will receive a bronze medal, a Wendy’s High School Heisman state finalist patch and a $25 Wendy’s gift card. The state finalists will then continue on to the next round of the Wendy’s High School Heisman program, where one male and one female student-athlete from each state will be named state winners.

“The Wendy’s High School Heisman Program has recognized exceptional student athletes for more than two decades,” the company said. “The program continues to provide a platform where students are acknowledged and rewarded for their hard work and also inspired to continue their success.”

State winners will be announced on Nov. 9. Two weeks later, the 10 national finalists will be selected and will compete for the national title in New York City on Dec. 11.

Student-athletes had to submit applications in order to be considered for the Wendy’s High School Heisman program. Requirements included being a member of the graduating class of 2016, having a 3.0 GPA, participating in at least one of the 43 sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee or the National Federation of State High School Association, and being able to prove leadership in the community.

Wendy’s, in partnership with the Heisman Trophy Trust, has recognized outstanding students-athletes with the awards for 22 years.
