West Hartsville Elementary student counseling partnership awarded $100,000 grant from Byerly Foundation
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Byerly Foundation Board of Trustees approved this year nearly $400,000 in grants aimed at helping Hartsville continue to be a great place to live, work and raise a family.
The largest grant awarded this year went to a partnership between West Hartsville Elementary School and the Child and Family Resource Foundation. The $100,000 grant will help fund a program and study at West Hartsville aimed at building resilience, opportunities and aspirations among children at school.
“The students and staff at West Hartsville Elementary feel very blessed to be a part of a Byerly Foundation Grant with Child and Family Resource Foundation,” said Julie Mahn, principal at West Hartsville Elementary. “The BROACH Program will allow students to receive individual and group counseling, academic assistance and family support.”
Hartville High School’s Red Regime marching band earned a grant of $30,000 to help with the purchase of musical instruments. Also at Hartsville High, the athletics program earned a $7,500 grant to help purchase three new automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to enhance the safety of student-athletes.
“The board is pleased and excited to be able to help grantees with these projects that were funded this year,” said Jerome Reyes, chairman of the Byerly Foundation Board of Trustees. “Hartsville is a dynamic community with a lot of things happening, and the board had to make hard decisions among more than 20 grant requests for this year.”
The Foundation, which was formed upon the sale of the former Byerly Hospital in 1995, is a private foundation making grants to nonprofit organizations and other eligible organizations that work on education, economic development and social needs in the greater Hartsville area.
