SAVANNAH, Ga. – More than 60 fifth-grade students who are in the Darlington County School District’s (DCSD) Gifted and Talented Program recently visited Savannah to study firsthand its extraordinary structures and marine ecosystem.
Guided by teachers and parents, the students took a trolley tour of the city’s Historic District, boated with dolphins on an ‘eco-cruise,’ visited St. John the Baptist Cathedral, and toured the Mighty Eighth Air Museum.
Marisa Johnson, DCSD’s coordinator for Arts and Innovative Programs, said the trip gets students out into the real world to experience what they study each day.
“This is a culminating learning excursion for our fifth grade Gifted and Talented students. Savannah is a beautiful city with so much rich history,” Johnson said. “Our students had an awesome time learning outside of the classroom.”
The Gifted and Talented Program is an English/Language Arts and Math-based curriculum. The course work is designed to challenge and encourage participants to problem solve.
