Three Darlington County Board of Education members recognized for achievements with SCSBA’s Boardmanship Institute
DARLINGTON, S.C. – Three Darlington County Board of Education members successfully completed training recently with the S.C. School Boards Association’s (SCSBA) Boardmanship Institute for 2018-2019.
The SCSBA Boardmanship Institute, established in 1982, offers a year-round training curriculum to help board members develop skills and stay up-to-date on state and national education issues. Workshops focus on school law, advocacy and legislation, improving board operations, leadership for improving student achievement, and other timely topics.
Darlington County Board of Education Vice Chair Dr. Thelma Dawson and members Richard Brewer and Leigh Anne Kelley achieved new levels this year.
Dawson reached the Institute’s Level Two, while Brewer and Kelley each reached Level One. Board members can achieve up to six levels of recognition by earning points that are accrued annually from July through June for participation in statewide conferences and training provided onsite in their district.
Statewide, SCSBA recognized 162 school board members for reaching one of the six levels for the 2018–19 year with certificates of achievement and a lapel pin designating their level of accomplishment in the institute. Dawson, Brewer and Kelley were all recognized during the Darlington County Board of Education’s August meeting.
In previous years, other Darlington County Board of Education members earned recognition through the Boardmanship Institute:
• Warren Jeffords, Chairman – Level Four
• Wanda Hassler, Secretary – Level Four
• Connell Delaine – Level Six
• Charles Govan – Level Six
• Jamie Morphis – Level Two
Each year, about 80 percent of board members statewide attend at least one training session.
SCSBA is the statewide professional organization serving as a source of information, training and advocacy for the state’s 81 school district boards, county boards and state special schools.
