DCSD's Story

In the Darlington County School District (DCSD), we believe it is our job to provide all children with positive, rigorous, and innovative educational experiences. By working as one cohesive group, we are focused on providing the support and opportunities essential to mold our students into successful academics, professionals, and citizens.

We provide challenging and differentiated instruction for more than 9,500 students in 22 schools and programs, including three new traditional schools and a new fully virtual program. All schools and the district are fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/AdvancED and the SC Department of Education.

In DCSD we work to build a culture that is rooted in understanding our students and our communities. Every DCSD student is paired with a mentor outside of the regular classroom through an empowered effort to provide support, build soft skills, and encourage character development. In addition to standard classes, DCSD offers elementary and middle school magnet programs in the arts, sciences, mathematics, and technology. Our high schools offer an International Baccalaureate school, an early college degree program, a top-ranked STEM school, and the Darlington County Institute of Technology (DCIT), a world-class facility offering career and technical courses with professional certification tracks. DCIT strives to build a highly skilled professional workforce for Darlington County and beyond by working with business and industry to provide work-based learning experiences for our students. The District seeks to align workforce needs with education initiatives, providing innovative and motivated high school students with paid internships and apprenticeship opportunities with our business partners.

We believe that exceptional educators are vital to a student’s success. With professional learning communities at all grade levels, teachers regularly collaborate to identify and share best practices. Teams of DCSD teachers are designing and implementing a rigorous curriculum design model for core courses in all grades. This curriculum model ensures consistent and systemic delivery of instruction in all schools.

Darlington County School District provides a technology-rich education in a 1-to-1 environment, providing every student K-12 with a personal learning device, which is regularly used in a blended learning model of instruction. We also provide teachers with cutting-edge tools, training, and resources to best utilize the digital learning environment and incorporate instructional technology strategies into our lesson plans. Our district offers computer-based programs to evaluate and differentiate instruction, online coursework, and online credit-recovery tools for our students. Our new Darlington County Virtual Academy serves students in grades K-12 with a structured, rigorous academic program run by district personnel and teachers.

Outside of the classroom, we strive to create and sustain opportunities for our students to play a role in our greater community. Our schools emphasize collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking through successful athletics programs, special interest clubs, and partnerships with charities and civic organizations.

Clear and regular communication with the Darlington County Board of Education as well as our communities is at the core of these initiatives. In Darlington County School District we are building a world-class education system by focusing on the needs of every child, every day.
