2025 Hall of Fame inductees announced

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- The Darlington County School District (DCSD) is proud to announce the 2025 inductees into the DCSD Hall of Fame. This honor recognizes individuals who have graduated from or worked at DCSD schools and made significant contributions locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally in their field, business, or community. It also includes former educators who enriched the community and shaped the success of countless students during their tenure with DCSD.

The 2025 inductees are the late Dr. Thelma Dawson, Dr. Willie E. Boyd Sr., and Dr. Charlie Burry.

Dr. Thelma Dawson (deceased): Dawson dedicated over 34 years to the Darlington County Board of Education, including serving as chairman and vice-chairman. She championed facility upgrades, academic initiatives, digital learning, and community health programs. A trailblazer as the first African American female dentist in Florence and Darlington counties, Dawson broke racial and gender barriers and provided free dental care to children in need. She also advocated for higher pay for district employees and increased focus on the arts and health services in schools.

Dr. Charlie Burry, Jr.: Over a 40-year career at Hartsville High School, Burry served as a teacher, guidance counselor, coach, and principal, with 14 years in the latter role. His leadership drove academic and fine arts enhancements, substantial facility upgrades, and notable athletic achievements, significantly shaping education in Hartsville.

Dr. Willie E. Boyd, Sr.: Boyd devoted 50 years to DCSD in roles such as teacher, assistant principal, principal, director of transportation, assistant superintendent, hearing officer, associate superintendent, and Interim Superintendent. Starting as a teacher at Mayo High School, he became a trusted leader, shaping policies and mentoring others. Boyd’s commitment earned accolades like South Carolina Transportation Director of the Year and the SCASA Lifetime Achievement Award, leaving a legacy of leadership and service.

“These three individuals exemplify the heart and soul of the Darlington County School District,” said Dr. Tim Newman, DCSD superintendent. “Dr. Dawson, Dr. Boyd, and Dr. Burry each dedicated their lives to creating opportunities and improving outcomes for students, staff, and the community. Their tireless commitment to education, leadership, and service has left a lasting legacy that continues to inspire us all.”

The district will induct the 2025 DCSD Hall of Fame honorees at a ceremony in January.
