J.L. Cain’s Wells wins 2023 Holiday Card Art Contest

DARLINGTON, S.C. – Kariss Wells, a fifth-grade student at J.L. Cain Elementary School (JLC), is the winner of the Darlington County School District’s (DCSD) 2023 Holiday Card Art Contest.

Wells’ drawing, which features one particularly happy red-nosed reindeer in a wintry scene, will be printed on the front cover of the district’s official holiday card.

This year, the Holiday Card Art Contest included DCSD students in grades 3-5. Each elementary school selected a school winner from artwork submitted by their students. Employees in DCSD’s Administrative Office then voted on an overall winner from among the 9 finalists.

Wells will receive a certificate, $50 and a packet of holiday cards featuring the winning artwork. JLC art teacher Timothy Green will receive $100 for art supplies for his school. All of the other finalists will also receive a certificate.

The eight other finalists for this year’s competition were:

  • Amani Windham, fifth grade, Lamar-Spaulding Elementary School
  • Brooklyn Bertolette, fourth grade, Brockington Elementary Magnet School
  • Dalia Diaz Neri, fifth grade, Thornwell School for the Arts
