DARLINGTON, S.C. – Carlita King, Darlington County School District’s (DCSD) assistant superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, announced her retirement this week, according to the school district. King, who has served as Assistant Superintendent since 2013, will retire at the end of the school year.
“Mrs. King is a dedicated educator who is passionate about student success,” said Dr. Tim Newman, district superintendent. “We appreciate her contributions to the success of our district and wish her all the best in her retirement.”
King is a veteran educator and education leader. She began her career as a teacher, teaching in middle school, high school, and adult education. In 1999, she moved into administration as the assistant principal and curriculum coordinator in Orangeburg, S.C., before moving to a principalship in Calhoun County School District. In 2007, King joined the Darlington County School District as principal of Darlington Middle School, where she served for six years before moving to the district level as assistant superintendent.
While assistant superintendent, King guided the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment through the myriad curriculum challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, several AdvancEd and Cognia accreditations, and the development and implementation of new common curriculum guides. She also helped anchor the development of the new district-wide strategic plan.
The district will begin seeking a new assistant superintendent immediately.
