Child Early Reading Development and Education Program (CERDEP)
Pre-Kindergarten (4K) Program Overview
Darlington County School District offers a FREE, full-day pre-kindergarten (4K) program for income-eligible children who are 4 years old on or before September 1. This voluntary program is offered at your child’s zoned elementary school, follows the regular school schedule, and includes bus transportation, as well as daily breakfast and lunch.
What is CERDEP?
The Child Early Reading and Development Education Program (CERDEP) is a state-funded initiative offered in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Education. Designed to prepare children for school success, CERDEP provides developmentally appropriate learning experiences using research-based curriculum, ongoing assessment, and best practices aligned with state guidelines. Parents are also given opportunities to participate in workshops that support their child’s educational journey.
Why Pre-K Matters
The 4K program helps build a strong foundation for lifelong learning by supporting:
-
Social, emotional, and academic growth
-
Play, collaboration, and exploration
-
Cognitive, physical, and emotional development
-
Instruction from certified, dedicated educators
Enrollment Information
Enrollment is open and non-discriminatory. All applicants are screened using the DIAL-4 school readiness assessment. If the number of eligible students exceeds available space, children are placed on a waiting list and admitted based on demonstrated educational need.
